Perspectives

The first project Ashley designed in graduate school was this interactive design she calls “Perspectives.” This project took place during design week of Summer 2021. Ashley knew she wanted to do something about perspectives and 3-D, and visiting guest designer Piotr Szyhalski worked alongside the class to further inspire ideas. He pushed Ashley to think deeper about perspectives, rather than focusing on perspectives as simply which way you are viewing something from. So, Ashley pushed the idea further by using typography and color. She created wooden frames to hold printed words that stand at 1.5 feet tall, all with these being different orientations and lengths. Based on how one looks at this project, different words on the walls have opposite meanings. For example, someone standing on one side of the project might see the wall read “division,” but someone viewing the same wall from the other side might read “passage.” Therefore, the meaning of the wall is all a matter of perspective. Further than that, these walls are small enough to move around, which further pushes the idea of perspective. During the presentation, Ashley was able to invite her classmates to move the walls around however they liked.
