This project was my first experience with creative coding. During a two week period at my time at Otis while earning my Master’s degree, visiting artist Vera van de Seyp taught my classmates and I the basics of p5 .js creative coding. For the topic of this project, I chose to do something with ancient architecture, as it’s a main interest of mine. Some of the oldest architecture still standing today is located in Malta, which is what I decided to focus on specifically.
The ancient Megalithic Temples of Malta are built with stone blocks, similar to what I recreated with the falling blocks in this creative coding webpage. Additionally, I decided to spell out the word ‘MALTA’ in the blocks, which you can then click on and break them. While doing this, the “structure” remains standing and eventually rebuilds over time. This captured, to me, the essence of ancient architecture as it weathers through time, remains standing, and is even rebuilt over time. This project was completed July 2022.
